Dorset National Landscape - Nature Buddies Network
Nature Buddies Network is a new initiative being established across Dorset which aims to assist individuals to access nature for well-being with the support of a specially trained volunteer Buddy. A Buddy could help someone to attend a regular group or activity (such as a gardening group), to get out for regular walks, or to access nature sites close to home or even from their garden or local park.
The project matches trained volunteers, known as ‘Nature Buddies,’ with individuals who may be feeling isolated, anxious, or lacking the confidence to engage in outdoor activities on their own. This includes those with mild to moderate mental health conditions or compromised mobility. The aim is to reduce loneliness and social isolation, boost mental and physical health and help
people take steps towards wider community and nature-based opportunities. For healthcare professionals, this service offers a free, valuable, non-clinical option that can complement social prescribing and provide personalised support for those who may benefit from spending more time outdoors. Through one-to-one or small group support, Nature Buddies offer friendly encouragement to help people enjoy nature and heritage in a way that feels comfortable for them. This might include going for a walk or visiting a local green space, joining in a group activity
or taking part in nature-based activities from home. All activities are based around a user-centred approach.
